I’m a 70s child, baby.
And I’m not afraid to show the world.
As clearly evident on numerous runways, the 70s movement has been steadily gaining trajectory for several seasons now. From Gucci to Céline to Valentino, we’ve been privy to all forms of silhouettes and shapes harking back to that era. Be they platforms or stacked heels and fringe; loud prints or big floppy hats, clothes (and accessories) were happy statements, blissful even, peppered with a touch of whimsy. Designers paraded delectable hues from every single colour on the palette, ranging from riotous to confectionery, with pinks dominating the scene (Rose Quartz, hello).
Incidentally, if it does appear as though links abound in this post, they do. There are just so many wondrous things I must share with you today.
In a world which has become increasingly tumultuous and erratic, it’s perfectly understandable why we seek joy from all avenues, and how that desire extends to the garments we wear, the accessories we choose, the lifestyles we pursue. It’s equally easy to see why collections shown across the fashion capitals were highly emotive, expansive, intuitive.
Because the 70s was one such time.
A decade of exuberance. Of gaiety, and of frivolity. Clothes were indicative of that carefree vibe. I’m talking about jumpsuits, and oh so flattering (non constricting) dresses. High rise pants. Flared cuffs. Sometimes the two together with a tight cropped crop. Acid rainbow colours. Let’s not forget patchwork. Or denim, more than a mere workwear staple, and loads of it too. Topped with a devil-may-care attitude that I find rather fetching, I must say.
Poetic thoughts aside, style trends from the 70s aren’t quite as straightforward to embrace without appearing costumey. It really doesn’t take much to go from relaxed offhandedness to roller derby disco girl. Believe you me, I know this for a fact. Certainly not what we’re striving for. In such an instance, best to select elements of a trend instead of adopting it wholesale. Case in point, a culotte ensemble. Fact – culottes were really huge in the 70s, think Charlie’s Angels, the original trio. Fact – culottes will always be in (apparently), no matter which decade you’re taking inspiration from. Fact – the culotte conundrum is no more. It’s officially cool to be seen wearing these baggy contraptions of a somewhat awkward length.
Yes, it took me quite some a long time to understand public fascination with what appears to be a half-skirt half-pants item of clothing but I’ve somewhat accepted them into my life and my wardrobe. With slight reservations. I’ve made it a point that 2016 will be the year I try everything new at least once, and clearly, culottes fall within that category.
Despite the fact that it’s now become the stuff of street style ubiquity, I put a lot of thought into creating a culotte outfit with a 70s vibe that still looks new and fresh.
Chalk that up to an Isabel Marant top with a worn-in feel, those oversized sunnies with an attitude, a pair of patchwork leather ankle booties (with stacked heels too, mind you) down to adopting an air of not taking fashion too seriously, and there’s my lesson in making a must-have your very own.
So tell me.

I adore the 1970’s. Kind of weird since initially I didn’t. I think Vix from Vintage Vixen influenced me greatly into accepting and loving 1970’s style again.
I was born in 1966 and lived through culottes. I also tried to do them again and decided that they weren’t for me the first time around and they still aren’t.
For me this outfit is all about the booties. Oh yeah.
