Faux Real

Fur has always been a point of contention in the catty dramatic world of fashion.   Some view as fur as being luxurious,  a symbol of social status more often than not associated with glamour, the fast life and lavish spending.  Yet others reject it due to moral beliefs and perceived cruelty to animals (British fashion designer and outspoken animal rights activist Stella McCartney comes to mind). Did you know that in terms of apparel construction, there are so many additional considerations when working with fur?  For instance, one has to be extraordinarily careful about weight, bulk and line.  Or that a toile for a fur coat has to be cut far larger than for a silk one?  It’s about the meticulous reassembly of small strips to preserve the continuity of the fur stripe and other features of the piece, resulting in a fabric of fur as versus an jigsaw puzzle of pelts and bits. Whatever your viewpoint on fur, the fact remains that it’s very striking, and undeniably unforgettable. While I’m neither for nor …

Sequins & Sneakers

Kicks. Sneakers. Chucks. Trainers. Tims. Limous. Whatever you call ‘em, the sneaker culture has completely conquered the world despite initial catty quips over palette and textural choices. Personally, I haven’t been all that enamoured of the sporty look. I’m more of a glam-is-more woman when it comes to anything I wear, from the top of my head to the tip of my toes. Even my gym outfits are colour co-ordinated with random sparkles and/or other forms of glitz. I”m a magpie and proud of it. Still, one of my style objectives for 2015 is to (actually) wear sneakers (put it out to the world here and here so I’m somewhat stuck between a rock and a pair of sneakers).  With the gauntlet thus thrown, what’s Sheela to do? I’m really loving this sassy fun number from the great DVF (available here), my very first blingy piece? It’s beaded all over with silvery thingies, allowing me to slowly edge into the shiny world of sequins, sequins, and more sequins – yet another must do on my …

Swing Out, Sister

At this point, I think it’s clear that I’m a product of the 70s and one who loved thrived during the 80s British new wave music scene. I can’t help it. Sarawak is, after all, an ex-British colony. Not that any of that relates to my post save for the title, I’ll admit. But hey, it’s my party and I’ll swing out, if I wanna, sista GRIN that sounded wrong on every level, I know. In other news, these photographs were actually taken a little while ago and I somehow managed to forget they existed. Do you know, it’s the very first time I’m wearing a coat which isn’t Black. I’m loving it!!! And yes, it’s a little challenging to wear shorter skirts and heels when my knees are still recovering from surgery but then again, vanity trumps sanity. Incidentally, I’ve only just discovered a trick many a seasoned blogger has been leveraging on the longest time ever – the power of shades to not only hide tired eyes but also add some oomph to …
