Kicking It

This year, I’ve stepped outside my box quite a few times.   First there were those jogger pants (I blame you, Liyana).  Then that thing with jumpsuits which occurred here, here and here (all thanks to Annie).  And now, my second time with sneakers.  I must admit it’s rather gratifying that we can pull on a pair of sneakers with just about anything and (usually) be considered on trend and, gasp, stylish even?  Some fads can be fun, huh. That being said, I don’t quite know when (if ever) I’ll be on that bandwagon for pencil skirts (I can’t find one that looks halfway decent on me) or for celebrate flats the way some of my peers do.  I just can’t.  I can, however, relish in wearing sneakers, both in and out of the gym.  Sportwear and streetwear have become so intertwined that there’s hardly any difference between the two anymore. In sadder news, temperatures in Houston have been escalating of late and that makes me very unhappy.  I honestly thought I’d have a little …

Playing With Prints

We keep repeating the mantra that fashion ought to be, above all, fun. And playful.  A true representation of our personalities. But too often I find myself hiding behind tried and tested formulas, sticking closely to what’s been proved instead of sticking my neck out, you know, exploring new territory. Does that tend to happen to you too? I have the greatest of admiration for those who flirt unabashedly with print and pattern, all perfectly put together in the name of go bold or go home.  Catherine puts together seemingly improbable combinations with a masterful hand.  Ann boldly goes where many of us dare not and does so with blatant joy. Sacramento Amate or, as she’s more popularly known, Mis Papelicos, attacks loud prints in even louder colours with gusto and electic chic. Also, I would be completely remiss if I failed to mention Kirsten and her knack for pairing graphic prints with strong colours to create striking outfits that make you wonder why you’d never thought of them yourself. And there’s Samantha, a newly …

Anatomy Of An Outfit

Sometimes, my posts revolve around the conceptualisation and birth of a look. At times, there’s absolutely no correlation between the two.  And then there are times whereby what you see me wearing and the words I’ve written to go along with it, are inextricably linked and yet the connection isn’t clear at first glance.  It’d be something visceral, appealing to deep inward feelings rather than to the intellect. This is such an instance, this post right here. Born and bred in Borneo (aka Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak), the only seasons we had were hot/dry and wet/dry, with the occasional flash flood.  My only experiences with calendar-based weather changes the likes of Autumn and Winter were through the pages of books.  Enter Enid Blyton (this woman, along with Agatha Christie as well as C S Lewis and Tolkien, have been my spirit soulmates where writing is concerned since day one) and her wonderful tales of faeries, far off lands and magical walks in enchanted woods. Through Ms Blyton’s prose, I “ambled along paths strewn …

Polka Dots & A Touch Of Whimsy

Does the sight of polka dots not put a smile on your face? For me, these spotted darlings rank high right alongside carousels, cotton candy and balloons in terms of the happy happy, joy joy factor. Perhaps it’s their uniformed roundness, or the way they look as though they could bounce from corner to corner with adorable accuracy. Or the way they appear rotund and poofy and beyond cute. Whatever it is that elevates their appeal quotient, I love polka dots and would wear them ever so happily, day in day out. I am obviously acting under the influence of polka dots. I cannot be held responsible for my goofiness. No, I have no valid reason to justify my marching. Nor the swinging of my arms. I told you polka dots make me happy. Do they make you happy? An Actual #OOTD Post

When it comes to putting together an outfit post, in the absence of Eureka moments, here’s my default sequence of events:- > lay in bed the night before, mentally visualing outfits and trying to decide which accessories go with which, and generally working myself up to insomnia state > after a few fitful hours of sleep, I am up around 5am, and I go reheat the coffee my man brewed for me last night,  sip it slowly while trying to remember the set of outfits I’d finally settled on (between 3 to 4 looks, these last for a week until the next weekend shoot) > put on my Klorane Eye Patches to look as unpuffy as possible > lay down on the couch and wait for my photographer to wake up, our shoots usually start around 10.45am or thereabouts > put on an SK-II Mask around 9.30 to prep the face > paint my face put on my make-up > start shooting Note that during this entire process, it’s very likely everything I’d planned flies …
