Hear Ye, Hear Ye

When I first began submitting articles to the Independent Fashion Bloggers (IFB) website for possible inclusion in its weekly round-up column, little did I imagine that three would be accepted, all in a row. I’m so thrilled and fortunate. This time, it’s the piece I wrote on imagination. Please have a read and let me know whether you agreed or disagreed with my viewpoints. It’s always lovely to have a conversation here 🙂 my article is #14 on the list but here’s a shortcut. Cozy & Chic For those of you in the US, Happy Thanksgiving! While we’re all laying around the house waiting for the turkey to come out of the oven, or rooting for their favorite dog to win the National Dog Show, or rooting for their favorite football team, or playing Just Dance on the Wii, just because we’re getting cozy today doesn’t mean we’re not chic. Cozy up to this week’s roundup and have a wonderful day! Links à la Mode: November 27th Anami Blog: How To Wear a Camel Coat …

Meeting Ms Minkoff

Ladies and gentlemen, it was Friday the 21st. The time? Just five minutes shy of 1pm. The scene was Neiman Marcus at the Galleria (my first time, incidentally) and the occasion? An informal meet-and-greet with the designer post her Fashion Houston 5 runway show. Yes, I was in the presence of the one and only Rebecca Minkoff. Did I mention I was starstruck? I know I told her, yes, I did. Rebecca was so gracious about it, patting my arm like a BFF and telling me there was absolutely no need for me to feel that way #girlcrush I recall my initial impression being WOW. Was she the designer or one of the models? My mistake could be easily forgiven given that Rebecca stands 5’9″ in bare soles. Later, I would discover that her dream had been to be a dancer, but height got in the way. That her I Love New York tee shirt skyrocketed when Jenna Elfman wore it on the Jay Leno show in 2001. And that she would spend the next …

Fashion Houston 5 – A Runway Recap

Our picture featured in the Houston Chronicle online the very next morning, woot woot!! Last Wednesday night, courtesy of Fashion Houston 5, I attended my very first live runway show with Eve at the ever glamorous Wortham Centre. Glitzy, posh and perfectly put together, the range of looks shown was, simply put, astounding. Several students from the Fashion Institute of Houston (a part of the Art Institute of Houston) opened the show. We were seated in the fourth row from the runway (so amazing) which meant we were able to both appreciate and discern. I must confess that, for the most part, I wasn’t impressed. Workmanship and finishing were not as they should be. Originality was lacking. I love that there are emerging talents in Houston but I don’t believe all of them came out to play that night. Having said that, I was very impressed by these two looks from Inclan and DAN. Fabulousness. Inclan DAN So fresh, so must-have. And there were these beautiful pieces from Rene Ruiz. More loveliness from Rubin Singer. …

Starlight, Starbright

The Mara Gold Necklace with Platinum Drusy, Eve’s pick. “One thing that a lot of people don’t know is that I’m a bit silly and kind of a dork,” says Kendra Scott, Founder and CEO of Kendra Scott Design.  I’m not certain if the jeweler is truly either but what I do know with absolute certainty is that a recent preview of her Starstruck Winter Collection has converted yours truly from onlooker to aficionado. There were SO many pieces in countless shades, to satiate every bauble whimsy. And if that wasn’t sufficient, enter the Kendra Scott Colour Bar.  An a la carte spread of gems and findings allowing you to create that exclusively-yours trinket with ease. I should’ve known letting Eve browse around was a recipe for (financial) disaster.  One would imagine I had this down after 15 years. Turquoise. Abalone. Clear as well as Rutilated Quartz. Onyx. Bliss. What I we picked, the Naomi Double Ring in Iridescent Cobalt. And this EXQUISITE cuff with that motif.  Equal parts constellation and lacework. 100% breathtaking. I …

Very Valentina

“Life is so short, it’s really a moment. We must live it always like it’s the last day of our lives.” ~ Valentina Kova Russian by birth but true blue New Yorker from every other perspective, Valentina Kova is one to watch.  While she started out by designing jewellery, it was inevitable that a ready-to-wear line would follow suit.  Four seasons ago, to be precise.  With a stellar line-up of celebrity clients including Miranda Lambert, Julianne Moore and Lavender Cox, the designer truly made her mark on the world of fashion when she showed, for the very first time, in NYFW just recently. Here are some of my absolute crave-wants from her SS2015 Collection.  It’s enough to make a grown woman rob a bank.  Or dig into a mountainous pile of leftover Halloween candy.  Maybe both. By now, you must be positively enamoured of her creations, as I am, and are excitedly awaiting the dawn of Fashion Houston.  Now in its fifth year, Fashion Houston will be held at the Wortham Theater Center from 18th …

Getting Ahead Of The Curve

Joining Houston Fashion Bloggers has been the smartest thing I’ve done in a while.  Since becoming a member in September, I’ve had multiple doors open up for me.  The most recent being a trunk show hosted by the world’s very first plus size supermodel, Emme, at Macy’s, Memorial City Mall.  Let me confess immediately that the event was an immense eye-opener.  A privileged insight into the world of plus size style.  It was such an experience that I had to split my thoughts into two separate postings, one of which will focus on the topic in depth.  And the other?  I leave you now with a gallery of event pictures 🙂 Emme, ever so statuesque and glorious. And by the side is lifestyle blogger, Randie. See anyone familiar? There’s Shalanda, co-founder of Houston Fashion Bloggers to the right! This is where I asked Kate, the model in the centre, for her booties GRIN I heart that dress to the left, I heart it so. Accessories I really coveted. I know there were others but the …

A Visual Story Of Naeem Khan

“Every designer needs a story. Mine is all about glamour.” ~ Naeem Khan Michelle Harris & Portia di Rossi Kate Hudson Holland Roden Nicole Richie Kate Beckinsale Padma Lakshmi The dress that made Khan the third most Googled person in the world that day. If you’re as big a fan of his couture creations as I am, you need to be at Fashion Houston.  Now in its fifth year, Fashion Houston will be held at the Wortham Theater Center from 18th to 21st November 18th BUT you don’t need to wait that long to pore over and covet beautiful pieces. No, you don’t.  As I’ve mentioned before, if you love fashion and you’re in Houston, you have to be at the Kick-Off Party, Friday night.  All proceeds from the night shall be channelled towards Dress For Success Houston.  Say it with me, altruism is sexy. Tickets on sell here.   Love, Sheela

Front Row Seats

Having moved to Houston a scant four years ago, let me be the first to confess I’m still navigating my way around the local fashion scene.  Trying to identify pockets of creative dressing in between the Lincolns and the dressed-from-head-to-toe-in-one-colour figures (if you live in the area, I know you know what I’m talking about).  Finding that refreshing spurt of spontaneous freestyling amidst the clones. And it’s been hard.  It’s been really hard.  At the risk of death by faux diamond pelting, the style environment here is vastly different from what I’d been used to (I lived in Singapore for over ten years, with frequent work travels to Hong Kong and Japan where, when it came to dressing, everyone was tolerant and experimentative and fearless). That is, until I discovered the Houston Fashion Bloggers.  This wondrous community has opened my eyes to what’s really happening when it comes to fashion in the heart of Texas.  Reminded me to dig deeper and look where I wouldn’t normally.  I love that.  And it’s also thanks to them …
