Being Different Is A Good Thing

Even as a teenager, I stood out because of the way I dressed. The way I styled my hair. The way I look. I mean, I have freckles for crying out loud. And when I did use it, the make-up on my face. I’m digging for photographic evidence but basically, my style of dressing emulated that of the amazing Anita Mui. Just do a quick search on Google for how she styled herself during the 80s and you’ll understand my groupie feelings where she was concerned. I wore harem pants in the late 80s. Pixie boots in a country wherein the only seasons we had were dry and hot, and wet and hot. This was also the time I very happily painted my lips Black and swished around in ankle length skirts (in Black, but of course) as homage to Robert Smith. I recalled odd looks aplenty and how my parents would be ever so often asked why I did the things I did. They, bless their hearts, never once mocked or ridiculed anything I …

My Story

Houston, It’s Been Quite The Ride   As some of you already know, I come from Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak in East Malaysia, and that I took off when I was 22 years old. A little while ago, the Editor-in-Chief of KINO (Kuching In And Out) approached me, asking if I’d be interested to contribute to their column, Ex-CAT which is a monthly, featuring bylines from Kuchingites who are either still living abroad or have spent many years outside of the country. Naturally, I was delighted, and now that the story’s out, I wanted to share it with you 🙂 I left Kuching in 1995, on my father’s birthday, to be precise. I was incredibly sad and scared, and excited and exhilarated. On one hand, I was leaving the safety net of my parents and the home I’d known for over two decades. But on the other hand, I couldn’t wait to go. I felt stifled, like a stranger in my own hometown, and in my heart, I knew that leaving was the …

My Week On Instagram

So it’s been quite the food-filled week with Father’s Day on the 21st as well as my husband taking me out for a lunch date on Friday. We try to do that every fortnight or so, give or take, more or less. In addition, we had yet another tropical storm alert, this time for Bill. And although no arks were ultimately needed, it made for a very wet and gloomy time. Here’s the calm before the storm. We all tried to enjoy the pool as much as possible leading up to Bill’s arrival. The Hibiscuses endured and prevailed. Alleluia. Because it was raining for the most part, we stayed indoors and I finally got around to opening my mountain of boxes/mail. This delightfully cheeky number is my Ipsy Glambag for May. Yes, May, and yes, my head is thus hung in shame. The weather cleared just in time for the weekend so we watched Inside Out in 3D. It wasn’t too shabby. For Father’s Day, we treated the man of the hour to crepes. Beautifully …

My Week On Instagram

Things definitely started on a sweet note with this candy from my childhood.  I was stoked to see that HEB stocks them on a regular basis. Yes, I love spikes.  And studs. When temperatures soar, so too my culinary experiments.  Here’s my Belafonte-inspired Banana Boat Salad. Harking back to those days when I created jewellery.  Asymmetrical earrings were a personal fave particularly when incorporating fabrics and notions. I’m all about tribal motifs for Summer, in loud colours. Finally, I made it pass the 1200 calorie mark.  To understand what a feat this is, you need to know that morning cardio has always been a challenge for me.  The mother of all challenges.  But with my thyroid completely dying on me (thanks, Hashimoto’s), I’ve had to up my cardio just to keep up with things. So yeah, chalking 1500 calories on the treadmill felt phenomenal. The people at Glow Recipe are simply spectacular, and so too the products they carry.  Here’s something nifty, DIY Rubber Masks for the face.  These arrived on Saturday afternoon and I’ll …
